The Ultimate Ski Holiday Packing List

There’s nothing quite like arriving in the Three Valleys (Les 3 Vallées) for a ski holiday. Fresh mountain air, snowy peaks, blue skies and a week of unforgettable adventure ahead.

But before you can think about carving down your first run, it’s important to make sure you have packed the right gear for the mountains.

Whether it’s your first ski trip or your tenth, it’s surprisingly easy to forget something important. We’ve put together this ultimate ski holiday packing list so you can arrive in the mountains ready to enjoy every minute.

Ski Clothing Essentials

Staying warm and comfortable on the mountain can make all the difference to your ski day. The key is to bring plenty of layers that you can add or remove depending on the weather and how you’re feeling.

There’s a lot of stopping and starting on a ski holiday, whether that’s sitting on a chairlift, stopping for a hot chocolate, or heading straight back down the next run. Your temperature can change quickly, so it’s always a good idea to pack extra layers of clothing.

Base Layers:

  • Thermal tops and leggings (merino wool is one of the warmest options)
  • Ski socks

Mid Layers:

  • Fleece or lightweight insulated jacket
  • Hoodie or warm sweater

Outer Layers:

  • Waterproof ski jacket
  • Ski trousers or salopettes.

Where possible, it’s best to avoid cotton. Technical fabrics will keep you warm while also allowing moisture to escape.

Ski Accessories You’ll Be Glad You Packed

These smaller items can make a big difference on the slopes.

  • Ski gloves or mittens
  • Neck warmer or buff
  • Beanie
  • Helmet – this should be non-negotiable.
  • Ski goggles
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen and lip balm (the alpine sun is stronger than you think!)

If you don’t have your own helmet, don’t worry. Our Ski Higher shops stock a range of helmets available to rent for the week, and our technicians will make sure you’re fitted properly before heading out to the slopes.

As well as helmets, our Ski Higher shops in La Tania and Les Allues also stocks a selection of ski accessories such as gloves, hats, goggles and buffs if you’d like to purchase anything in resort.

What To Wear Off The Slopes

Après-ski and evenings in resort are all part of the experience, so you’ll want to pack some comfortable clothes for time spent away from the slopes.

  • Comfortable winter boots
  • Warm socks
  • Jeans or trousers
  • Jumper or fleece
  • Casual evening outfit
  • Swimwear (many chalets and hotels have hot tubs or spas)

Travel Day Essentials

Make sure you keep a few important things in your hand luggage, or within easy access during your journey.

  • Passport and travel documents
  • Ski holiday booking confirmations (accommodation, ski hire, ski schools)
  • Insurance details
  • Phone charger
  • Headphones
  • Reusable water bottle (tap water is great in the Alps)
  • Snacks for the journey

Things You Might Not Have Thought About

There are a few additional items you may find useful to bring with you.

  • A backpack you can ski with (for water and extra layers).
  • Cereal bars or chocolate bars – perfect for a mid-morning energy boost on the mountain.
  • A hip flask if you’re planning a little après on the slopes.
  • A ski lock if you are bringing your own equipment.
  • Slippers – boot rooms can get wet, so having something comfortable to wear inside can make a big difference.

What You Don’t Need To Pack

One of the most common mistakes skiers make is bringing too much equipment from home.

Travelling with skis, poles and boots can be expensive, awkward and time-consuming.

Instead, many visitors choose to rent equipment in resort. With Ski Higher’s mobile delivery service, skis and boots can be delivered directly to your accommodation, meaning:

  • No queues in busy rental shops
  • Expert fitting in the comfort of your chalet or hotel
  • Less luggage to travel with

It’s a much simpler way to start your ski holiday.

A Few Final Packing Tips

Before you zip up your suitcase, a quick checklist:

  • Check the weather forecast
  • Leave a little space for anything you pick up in resort, such as souvenirs.

Most importantly, don’t stress too much. Resorts have plenty of shops if you forget something.

Once you’re packed and ready to go, all that’s left to do is enjoy the experience, from your first lift ride to the last run of the day.
